Essential Oil Therapy Essential Oil therapy incorporates therapeutic grade essential oils derived from various herbs and plants and light pressure massage techniques. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years in many parts of the world as natural healing aids. Each oil has unique properties benefiting the body in different ways. Some oils are anti-microbial, with the ability to fight various bacteria, viruses and fungi. Some contain substances that promote relaxation and rejuvenation and still others are stimulating. One commonly know essential oil is Tea Tree Oil. Tea Tree oil can be used to treat fungal infections, insect bites and cold sores. Lavender oil is also well known and commonly used. It is frequently added to massage lotion or oil to capitalize on its inherent ability to promote relaxation. Some oils can be taken internally, but most should be reserved only for topical application. While there are oils that can be applied in an undiluted form, many are considered “hot”, so are diluted with an neutral oil such as grape seed oil before application to the body. As with many massage techniques, there are some specific conditions which contraindicate the use of certain essential oils. Your therapist will conduct a pre-session interview with you to determine which oils are appropriate for your situation. |
